Rio Marathon 2026 lottery opens this Wednesday (12)

Registrations for the free Rio Marathon 2026 lottery open tomorrow, with spots for 21K, 42K and Challenge 21K + 42K.

Rio de Janeiro is gearing up for another historic edition of the Rio Marathon. Starting this Wednesday (12), runners can register for the lottery that will define the participants of the 21K, 42K and Challenge 21K + 42K races.

The lottery system is one of the main innovations of the event’s 24th edition, marking a new chapter in the race’s history. The initiative aims to democratize access, bringing more organization, transparency and equal opportunities for all athletes.

Inspired by international major marathons

Following the model of major races such as New York, London and Tokyo, the system will be completely free. As in New York, runners will only pay after being selected and confirming their spot.

This approach ensures a fair and transparent process, giving every participant the same chance to join one of Latin America’s biggest running festivals.

Return to the iconic course

In 2026, the Rio Marathon is expected to gather over 60,000 runners and will return to its classic route: starting at Praia da Reserva and finishing at Marina da Glória, along Rio’s famous beachfront.

Runners’ perspective

For marathoner Denise Amaral, known as the “Queen of Marathons”, the new system represents an important step forward. Having completed over 200 marathons worldwide, she praises the initiative.

“The lottery system is an excellent initiative. Just like in the majors, it brings fairness and transparency. This new format will balance and enhance the experience for all athletes,” said Denise.

Another remarkable story is that of Tiago Emerich from Espírito Santo, who cycles to Rio de Janeiro to participate in the marathon. Having completed this journey five times, he celebrates the event’s return to its original route.

“It’s great to see the organization adopting the lottery format. It makes the event more democratic and reconnects it with its roots,” Tiago said.

How the lottery works

Athletes can register for free on the GoDream platform from November 12 to 26, 2025, selecting their preferred race. On December 5, each participant will receive a unique number, used in the draw based on the Federal Lottery results of December 6.

The list of selected runners will be announced on December 10. Each chosen athlete will receive a personal and non-transferable link and coupon valid for five days to confirm their entry. If spots remain, additional rounds of selection will be held.
