Quilombo Groove brings faith and rhythm to CCBB São Paulo

From November 19 to 27, CCBB São Paulo hosts Quilombo Groove, a free Afro-Amapá celebration with music, dance, and photography.

The Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil São Paulo (CCBB SP) will be filled with music, faith, and Black resistance during Quilombo Groove – Prayers, Praises and Drums from the Quilombo of Curiaú. This free event highlights the ancestral strength of Amapá, bringing the powerful sounds of Marabaixo and Batuque—centuries-old traditions that blend spirituality and celebration—into the heart of São Paulo’s historic center.

Tradition meets contemporary art

After touring Brasília, Belo Horizonte, and Rio de Janeiro, the project arrives in São Paulo with an extensive program featuring concerts, workshops, storytelling sessions, discussions, and a photography exhibition portraying the beauty and symbolism of Curiaú’s quilombola celebrations, a cradle of Afro-Amapá culture.

Highlights include performances by Brenda Melo, MC Deeh, Pretogonista, Paulinho Bastos, Capitão Pupunha, and the Grupo Raízes do Bolão, creating a dynamic exchange between traditional and urban rhythms. Curated by Claudio Silva, the photo exhibition “Prayers, Praises and Drums” by Paulo Rocha visually captures Curiaú’s spiritual and artistic energy.

An Afro-Amazonian celebration

More than an artistic event, Quilombo Groove is a living expression of Black memory, identity, and resistance. It celebrates the quilombola heritage and affirms the power of Afro-Brazilian culture by bringing ancestral traditions into contemporary dialogue.
