Mohawks meet marching beats: São Paulo’s Carnival brings Bloco 77 and Fufulia (Sugar Kane, Hateen, more) to city venues on Feb 7–8, free entry.
Punk Carnival in São Paulo
Backed by the city’s Secretary of Culture and Creative Economy, the punk-leaning program lands at Casa de Cultura Butantã and Centro Cultural Tendal da Lapa.
On Saturday (Feb 7) at 3 pm, Bloco 77 takes its Bateria Revoltosa rehearsal to Tendal. At Butantã, the Fufulia festival runs Saturday and Sunday (Feb 7–8) from 3 pm with Sugar Kane, Hateen, Meu Funeral, Superheat, Luquita, and Noitesó.
Both events are free and require no tickets, with an all-ages rating.
Fufulia: rockers’ street-party spirit
Fufulia grew from Rio band Meu Funeral’s urge to celebrate Carnival on their own terms—bringing that mindset to São Paulo’s alternative scene.
“Because we’re from Rio, we really love this party. It’s the best in the world—if you don’t wear an outrageous costume, you’re doing it wrong.”
Saturday starts with doors at 3 pm at Casa de Cultura Butantã. Noitesó plays at 4:20 pm, leaning into emo with everyday themes; at 5:50 pm, Luquita (Meu Funeral) delivers a solo set; and at 7:15 pm, Sugar Kane closes the night with a full-band return and Carnival-ready visuals.
Sunday resumes with doors at 3 pm. Superheat hits at 4 pm, blending punk attitude with a saxophone edge; Meu Funeral follows at 5:30 pm with sharp social commentary; and at 7:30 pm, Hateen wraps the festival by pairing career staples with a costume-friendly invite to the crowd.
Bloco 77 at Tendal da Lapa
Bloco 77 emerged in late 2013 and staged its first street parade in 2014. The number “77” nods to the year often cited as the genre’s birth point.
On Saturday (Feb 7) at 3 pm at Centro Cultural Tendal da Lapa, the group presents “Originais do Punk,” featuring guest appearances by cumbia band Bazuros and the group Jão e os Periféricos.
The set flips traditional Carnival marches into punk in-jokes (including “Olha o moicano do Zezé”) and folds in Brazilian punk staples like Ratos de Porão and Cólera, driven fast by the La Revoltosa drumline. Organizers describe the party as anti-fascist, anti-racist, and anti-sexist, and say kids are welcome.
