From Black Sabbath to Caetano Veloso: São Paulo hosts themed street parties celebrating Rita Lee, Jorge Ben Jor, Milton Nascimento and other iconic artists in free events.The Municipal Department of Culture and Creative Economy transforms São Paulo’s streets into a stage for musical tributes ranging from heavy metal to tropicália this Carnival. Electric trios celebrate everything from the dark power of Black Sabbath to the lightness of Sandy & Junior, including Brazilian music masters like Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Rita Lee.
Saturday kicks off with Caetano and heavy rock
Saturday (14) begins at 11am with Tarado Ni Você bringing Caetano Veloso’s songs to Av. Ipiranga, 818. At the same time, Samby e Junior revives Sandy & Junior’s 90s hits at Largo do Arouche, 207, mixing pop and axé.At 2pm, Bloco Sabbath rocks Rua Ministro Gastão Mesquita, 120, with the heavy sound that redefined rock. At the same hour, Bloco Ritaleena transforms Rita Lee’s hits into marching tunes at Av. Casa Verde, 327. Closing the day, Bloco Maria Maria honors Milton Nascimento at 3pm at Casa de Cultura Municipal Tremembé.
Sunday grooves with Jorge Ben Jor and Maria Bethânia
Sunday (15) brings the Rio vibe of Bloco Benjores at 11am to Av. Prof. Frederico Hermann Junior, 345, performing Jorge Ben Jor. At 1pm, Bloco Explode Coração brings Maria Bethânia classics like “Reconvexo” and “Noite dos Mascarados” to Praça da República.
Monday celebrates Gil and Belchior
On Monday (16), Bloco Filhos de Gil grooves at Av. Hélio Pellegrino, 200, at 1pm with Gilberto Gil’s ijexá, samba and baião. Earlier at 11am, Bloco Ano Passado Eu Morri pays tribute to Belchior at Praça Jesuíno Bandeira, 186, with marching tunes and reinterpretations of the northeastern singer’s classics.
Post-Carnival closes with Tom Zé
