Rio’s metro runs nonstop from Saturday (Feb 21) at 5am through Sunday (Feb 22) at 11pm — covering Carnival’s biggest events this weekend.
Around-the-Clock Carnival Service
MetrôRio operates continuously throughout this Carnival weekend. Service begins at 5am on Saturday, February 21 and runs through 11pm on Sunday, February 22, keeping the city connected across all major events.
On both days, Line 2 runs between Pavuna and General Osório/Ipanema. Lines 1 and 4 cover the Uruguai–Jardim Oceânico/Barra da Tijuca corridor. Transfers between Lines 1 and 2 are available along the shared stretch between Central do Brasil/Centro and General Osório/Ipanema.
Important reminder: bags and backpacks larger than 25 liters are not permitted on the system during the weekend.
Anitta Block Party and Monobloco Downtown
Two of Rio’s most iconic street parties take over the Preta Gil Circuit in downtown Rio, both starting at 7am. The Bloco da Anitta rolls on Saturday (Feb 21), and the legendary Monobloco closes out the weekend on Sunday (Feb 22).
For revelers heading downtown, the operator recommends Carioca/Centro station. Boarding is only available from the Largo da Carioca side, where a special external ticket booth will be set up. Exit toward the South Zone is via access C (Convento); toward the North Zone, via access A (Rio Branco).
Cinelândia/Centro station runs on a reduced schedule: 6am–8pm on Saturday and 7am–8pm on Sunday. Boarding is through accesses A (Theatro Municipal) and E (Presidente Wilson), for pre-loaded card holders only. Exits are through accesses C (Pedro Lessa) and D (Odeon). Accesses B (Rio Branco) and F (Santa Luzia) remain closed for Carnival.
At Uruguaiana/Centro station, only access D (Presidente Vargas) is open for boarding. Exits are through accesses A (Uruguaiana) and D (Presidente Vargas).
Saara/Presidente Vargas station will be closed on both February 21 and 22.
Catete station remains open, but boarding is restricted to access B (Palácio), exclusively for passengers with a pre-loaded card or contactless payment. Exit is through access A (Catete). Access C (Silveira Martins) will be closed throughout Carnival.
Champions’ Parade at the Sambadrome
For Saturday night’s showstopper at the Marquês de Sapucaí Sambadrome, the two recommended stations are Central do Brasil/Centro and Praça Onze.
Passengers with tickets for odd-numbered sectors, those marching with samba schools near the “Balança Mas Não Cai” building, or heading to the Terreirão do Samba should alight at Central do Brasil/Centro.
Praça Onze station is the closest stop for guests with even-numbered sector tickets or those marching with schools near the Correios building.
Flamengo vs. Madureira at Maracanã
On Sunday (Feb 22), Flamengo takes on Madureira at 8:30pm in the Rio State Championship. To ease post-game crowds, MetrôRio extends boarding hours at Maracanã and São Cristóvão stations for one hour after the final whistle, until 11:30pm.
All other stations close boarding at 11pm but remain open for exits after that time. Security staffing will be reinforced across the system, with extra personnel near the stadium.
Fans with tickets for gates A, B, and C (West and South stands) should exit at Maracanã station (Line 2). For gates D, E, and F (East and North stands), the recommended stop is São Cristóvão station (Line 2).
Travel Tips
MetrôRio strongly advises passengers to top up their cards in advance or use contactless payment directly at the turnstiles to avoid queues during peak times.
