Mart’nália Honored at Bloco 7 de Paus Parade in Rio

On February 22, Bloco 7 de Paus closes Vila Isabel’s street carnival celebrating the legacy of Brazilian music icon Mart’nália on Boulevard 28 de Setembro.

The singer’s joy, irreverence, and cultural diversity inspired the bloc to bring one of the greatest names in Brazilian popular music to the streets of Rio’s North Zone. Festivities kick off at 4 PM in front of Restaurante Petisco da Vila, at Boulevard 28 de Setembro, 238.

A Bloc With Deep Roots

Founded in 2007, 7 de Paus has become one of Vila Isabel’s most beloved street blocs, drawing thousands of revelers through the North Zone every year. In 2024, the Rio de Janeiro City Council formally honored the bloc with a Citation of Merit for its cultural significance and community impact.

Cultural entrepreneur Márcia Rossi leads the movement, which was born at Praça Barão de Drummond. For her, honoring Mart’nália this year carries deep meaning.

Vila Isabel and the Spirit of Street Carnival

The 7 de Paus parade turns Boulevard 28 de Setembro into a vibrant gathering of generations, families, and lovers of Brazilian popular culture. The tradition cements Vila Isabel’s place as one of Rio’s most iconic street carnival destinations.

Márcia emphasizes the bloc’s year-round commitment: “We work all year for culture and our community, because we believe it is one of the best ways to transform society. Vila Isabel is the land of bohemia, samba, and street blocs. This year, our challenge is to bring revelers a carnival of peace and joy. I think 7 de Paus draws so many people because it is proof that true street carnival endures.”
