Alice Rohrwacher retrospective lights up Rio

CAIXA Cultural Rio screens the complete works of Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher in a free retrospective from March 3 to 15.

From March 3 to 15, 2026, Rio de Janeiro audiences can explore the magical and poetic cinema of Alice Rohrwacher. The exhibition The Enchantment in the Cinema of Alice Rohrwacher brings together her entire filmography, offering a complete journey through one of Europe’s most original contemporary voices.

Curated by Raquel Gandra, the retrospective highlights Rohrwacher’s distinctive blend of social realism and fantasy found in acclaimed films such as The Wonders (2014) and Happy as Lazzaro (2018), both honored at the Cannes Film Festival. The program also features her latest work, La Chimera (2023), starring Brazilian actress Carol Duarte, episodes from My Brilliant Friend, and classic films by Pier Paolo Pasolini and Ermanno Olmi that shaped her vision.

Complementing the screenings are a three-day course, a public debate, and special commentary sessions, all free and accessible with sign language interpretation. “Her films reveal the contradictions of our time through an exquisite poetic lens that gives voice to feminine rebellion,” says curator Raquel Gandra.

Rohrwacher, who studied literature and philosophy, champions analog filmmaking with 16 mm and 35 mm film. Her works combine myth and social critique, exploring themes such as adolescence, spirituality, rural life, and the power of imagination.
