Theatro Municipal opens its Music at the Assyrio series with the group Samba Jazz Jam on March 15 at 11 a.m., with affordable tickets. Curated by Suray Soren, violinist of the Theatro Municipal Symphony Orchestra, the project dives into the roots of Carioca samba jazz. The concert, held at the historic Assyrio Hall, marks the beginning of the 2026 season with a celebration of improvisation and musical freedom.
Improvisation meets tradition
Inspired by the “jam sessions” culture, the performance gathers instrumentalists in spontaneous interplay. The audience will witness an unrehearsed show blending hard bop and samba — the same vibrant fusion that shaped Rio’s jazz scene in the late 1950s, before bossa nova reached international fame.
“Samba jazz is freedom meeting the soul of Rio,” says curator Suray Soren.

Featuring renowned artists: Jessé Sadoc (trumpet), Idriss Boudrioua (alto sax), Fernando Trocado (tenor sax), Adriano Souza (piano), Tony Botelho (bass and musical direction), and Mac Willian Caetano (drums).
