Seven tracks bridging European tradition and Brazilian roots: Parisian Fife – For Flute and Harp hits streaming platforms on March 27 via Azul Music.
Brazilian composer João Marcondes releases his ninth album on Azul Music, bringing together two original works in a journey through contemporary chamber music. The record further cements Marcondes as one of Brazil’s leading voices in this genre.
Two works, seven tracks
The album is built around two compositions. The first, Pífaro Parisiense (Opus 67) — or “Parisian Fife” — is written for solo flute and spans the opening four tracks: Abertura, Gonzagueana, Debussyana, and Frevo. Each movement uncovers a distinct layer of the instrument’s expressive range, weaving between northeastern Brazilian references and French impressionism.
The second work, Boneca de Pano (Opus 78) — meaning “Rag Doll” — broadens the sonic palette by adding harp. Split into three movements — O olhar cativante da boneca de pano, Faceira, and Polinizadores — the piece builds delicate textures and a self-contained musical narrative, drawing on both the C flute and bass flute.
Performers and production
The performances are delivered by Rogério Wolf, widely regarded as one of Brazil’s foremost flutists, alongside Argentine harpist Sole Yaya. Their collaboration brings out the full depth of Marcondes’ writing, striking a balance between technical refinement and emotional expression.
The album was recorded at Estúdio Arsis, with sound engineering by Adonias Junior and production by the composer himself. As Marcondes’ ninth release on Azul Music, it marks another milestone in a steadily growing body of work in Brazilian contemporary chamber music.
The album proposes an aesthetic journey that engages with contemporary chamber music, incorporating references from the European tradition alongside elements of Brazilian culture.
