After two years away, the world’s largest open-air cinema screen returns to Rio’s Jockey Club with Oscars, live shows, and food until April 11.
Open Air Brasil is back in Rio de Janeiro with a historic mission: reaching 1 million total attendees since its very first edition, held at the same Jockey Club Brasileiro back in 2002. Running from March 25 to April 11, this season turns one of the city’s most iconic venues into an open-air film, music, and food festival unlike any other.
Presented by Brazil’s Ministry of Culture and Nubank, the event centers on the world’s largest outdoor cinema screen: a massive 325 square meters — roughly the size of a tennis court. Rio hasn’t hosted the festival since 2023, making this return a long-awaited celebration for the city’s film lovers.
“Open Air was born in Rio de Janeiro, so coming home will be an enormous pleasure, especially to celebrate everything that has happened with Brazilian cinema during this time: ‘I’m Still Here’ and ‘The Secret Agent’ conquered the world, and we’ll be celebrating that every single night. Bringing together cinema, music, gastronomy, and the world’s biggest screen, we mark 24 years of the event and the milestone of reaching one million people since our very first edition — which was also at the Jockey Club.” — Renato Byington, founder of the event and director of D+3
A lineup for every audience
The film selection covers a wide range of tastes. Brazilian standout “The Secret Agent” is one of the season’s highlights, alongside the preview screening of “Small Creatures”. Right after Oscar season, the giant screen will host the main award winners, including “One Battle After Another” — Best Picture winner — plus “Sinners”, “Hamnet”, “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, and “Marty Supreme”.
Classics round out the schedule: “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” screens in the director’s cut with a 15-minute intermission, and “Superbad” brings laughs under the stars. Also in the lineup: “The Bride!”, “Wuthering Heights”, “Wicked: Part 2”, and “Thelma & Louise”. The festival closes with documentary “Maya and the Wave”, telling the story of big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira.
Families are well covered too. Kid-friendly screenings of “Zootopia 2”, “SpongeBob: Search for the SquarePants”, “DPA 4”, and “Pilar’s Diary in the Amazon” come complete with themed activities and play areas before the show.
Live music every night
Music is woven into every evening. Pedro Baby opens the festival alongside Mart’nália and special guest Luiz Otávio, followed by Academia da Berlinda on the night of “The Secret Agent.” The Ney Conceição Quintet brings jazz to the open air during “Sinners,” while rapper 2ZDinizz closes “Superbad” night with energy.
The musical journey continues with CATTO, Jéssica Gaspar, DJ Janot, DJ Paulinho Sattamini, and DJ Lys Ventura, each paired with a specific screening. The season finale brings the Matinê do Quartinho after the closing documentary.
Food, drinks, and brand experiences
The food village brings together some of Rio’s beloved names. Over 14 days, guests can enjoy burgers from T.T. Burger, seafood from La Carioca, Argentine empanadas from Las Empanadas, cocktails from Quartinho, pizzas from Sisi, and desserts from patisserie Absurda.
Brand partners bring their own flair. RD Brasil, Granado, GWM (showcasing the Haval H6), and World Wine set up interactive spaces with giveaways, tastings, and exclusive experiences throughout the festival.
