Imperial treasures shine at antiques fair in São Paulo

After 20 years, the Circle of Antiquaries of Brazil returns with a free exhibition at Hotel Renaissance, showcasing rare art and historical masterpieces.

From April 8 to 11, the Hotel Renaissance in São Paulo hosts the 3rd Art, Antiques and Jewelry Fair, organized by the Circle of Antiquaries of Brazil. The event features over a thousand rare pieces, including furniture, sculptures, paintings, sacred art, and fine jewelry, with free entry via online registration on Sympla.

Founded by Luiz Octavio Louro Gomes in 2002, the association resumes activities after two past editions held in 2004 and 2006. “We want to show the public the best of national and international craftsmanship, ranging from the 17th to the 21st century,” said Gomes.

Historical highlights and collectibles

Among the highlights is a Georgian-period English silver tureen (1842/43) crafted by William K. Reid. Once part of the Brazilian Imperial Family’s collection, it was gifted by the English Royal Family to Emperor Pedro II and Empress Teresa Cristina at their wedding.

Another standout is “Pedro II in His Coming of Age” (1840), an oil on canvas by French painter Claude Joseph Barandier, portraying the young emperor wearing the Golden Fleece insignia with Rio de Janeiro and São Cristóvão Palace in the background.

The exhibition also features a wooden figurehead by Mestre Guarany, a celebrated Brazilian sculptor famed for his expressive carvings depicting the spirit of the São Francisco River culture.
