With Gabriel Gonti, Nova Orquestra plays Skank launches in three free shows across Rio state this April.
One of Brazil’s most beloved pop rock bands is getting an orchestral tribute. Nova Orquestra plays Skank, a new project from the country’s first fully pop orchestra, will tour Rio de Janeiro state with free performances and special guest vocals by singer-songwriter Gabriel Gonti.
In a reduced eight-member format, the run opens in Nova Friburgo on April 10 at Teatro Municipal Laércio Rangel Ventura. It then heads to Petrópolis on April 12 at Teatro Imperial. The final performance takes place in Rio de Janeiro on April 16 at Teatro Municipal Domingos Oliveira, in Gávea.
Nova Orquestra plays Skank through the band’s biggest hits
The setlist revisits songs that helped turn Skank into a defining name in Brazilian music in the 1990s and 2000s. The program includes “Resposta”, “Jackie Tequila”, “Garota Nacional”, “Te Ver”, “Saideira” and “Vou Deixar”.
At the same time, the project blends the emotional pull of those tracks with Nova Orquestra’s pop-symphonic approach. The production comes from Agência Olga, made possible through Brazil’s Rouanet cultural incentive law, with sponsorship from Vale.

Gabriel Gonti brings a personal connection to Skank’s catalog
Chosen to lead the vocals in the tribute, Gabriel Gonti says Skank played a direct role in his musical formation. A standout name in Brazil’s new MPB scene, he has surpassed 50 million streams on digital platforms.

Across nine years of career, Gonti has collaborated with Ana Gabriela, Vitor Kley, Amanda Coronha, Bryan Behr and the duo OutroEu. He was also the first artist produced by Maria Rita and now has 3 albums, 3 EPs and more than 50 released singles.
Skank’s legacy meets Nova Orquestra’s pop vision
Formed in 1991 in Belo Horizonte, Skank became one of Brazil’s most successful bands by blending rock, reggae, ska and pop. The lineup featured Samuel Rosa, Henrique Portugal, Lelo Zaneti and Haroldo Ferretti. Over the years, the group sold more than 6 million records. In 2023, after a farewell tour, the band decided to pause activities.
Meanwhile, Nova Orquestra built its reputation by bringing concert music closer to mainstream audiences. The project debuted in 2019 at Game XP before a crowd of more than 100,000 people. That same year, it was a main attraction at Rock in Rio’s Sunset Stage, later returning in 2022 alongside Jão and in the Uirapuru production.
Since then, the orchestra has also performed at Copacabana’s New Year’s Eve celebration, as well as festivals such as The Town, Rock The Mountain, Queremos and Doce Maravilha. It has completed international tours in the United States and Portugal and shared the stage with artists including Pitty, Ney Matogrosso, Alceu Valença, Rael, Fafá de Belém and Toni Garrido.
