Five decades devoted to the cavaquinho reach the Sala Cecília Meireles stage on April 17, with tributes to Paulinho da Viola and Waldir Azevedo.
Henrique Cazes, one of Brazil’s foremost cavaquinho players, takes the stage at Sala Cecília Meireles in Rio de Janeiro on April 17, 2026 (Friday), at 7 PM, for “50 Anos de Cavaquinho” (50 Years of Cavaquinho), part of the venue’s Sala Jazz series. The concert marks half a century dedicated to one of Brazilian music’s most iconic instruments.
Joining Cazes on stage is Raphael dos Santos on seven-string guitar, with special guest appearances by Rogério Caetano and Messias Brito. The program weaves original composition, virtuosity, and musical memory into a journey that showcases how far the cavaquinho’s expressive range has grown.
Two halves, one legacy
The first half features works from Cazes’ collection Música Nova para Cavaquinho — studies and original pieces that push the instrument’s technical and expressive boundaries. The second half pays tribute to two pillars of Brazilian tradition: Paulinho da Viola and Waldir Azevedo, celebrating the ongoing reinvention of a rich lineage.
Scholar, composer, and cultural bridge
Cazes holds a doctorate and master’s degree in Music from UFRJ, where he teaches in Brazil’s first undergraduate program dedicated to the cavaquinho. A soloist, arranger, producer, writer, and researcher, he has released landmark albums and authored essential works, including Choro: do quintal ao Municipal. His career bridges tradition and innovation, placing the cavaquinho at the center of Brazil’s cultural conversation.
