A UFSCar research project by Eduardo De Paula becomes a book featuring nine interviews with Brazilian theater artists and collectives.
Released this March by Simplíssimo Publishing, “Dialogues on Theater and Technologies: Other Mirages” is the result of artist-researcher Eduardo De Paula’s postdoctoral work at the Graduate Program in Image and Sound (PPGIS/UFSCar). Over 302 pages, the book maps out Brazil’s contemporary theater scene through conversations with artists from diverse regions.
Structured as a series of question-and-answer interviews, the work opens dialogues on how image and sound technologies shape creative processes in the performing arts. Moving beyond the traditional Rio–São Paulo axis, it highlights independent collectives and regional theater practices.
“The book outlines a plural cartography of Brazilian theater between 2020 and 2025, discussing presence, virtuality, immersion, and pedagogy,” writes Professor João Carlos Massarolo in the preface.
Topics include the impact of generative artificial intelligence, hybrid forms of stage presence, and new performative approaches. The publication also works as an educational resource, featuring a glossary, visual maps, and short artist biographies.
Intended for students, researchers, and enthusiasts of contemporary creation, the book offers a deep contribution to the ongoing dialogue between theater and technology in Brazil.
