Released during Women’s History Month, “Elas em Movimento: The Multiplicity of Experiences in Sports” stands as a milestone in the ongoing fight for equality. Organized by psychologists Adriana Lacerda and Clarice Medeiros, the collection brings together doctors, psychologists, educators, and athletes to discuss issues often ignored in sports.

The book includes 12 essays exploring topics from motherhood to the controversial “femininity tests” imposed on female athletes for decades. Authors such as Tathiana Rebizzi Parmigiano, Jacqueline Sabino, and Larissa Maria Carlos da Silva Rocha offer critical insights into women’s health, racism in sports, and representation across different life stages.

Among the testimonies are stories of empowerment, like those of Layana de Souza, leader of the “Mudando o Placar” initiative, Rosicleia Campos, former coach of Brazil’s Olympic judo team, and Rayssa Veras, a Paralympic fencer who competed in Paris 2024.

In the preface, psychologist Kátia Rúbio from USP recalls that nearly 11,000 women were subjected to invasive femininity tests since 1896. Despite progress — such as the gender parity at the 2024 Olympics — challenges persist in addressing body image pressure, motherhood balance, and the lack of female leadership in sports institutions.

“We hope this book encourages more women to stay in sports and helps dismantle the misogyny still rooted in athletic culture,” says Adriana.
