In recent years, interest in paranormal stories among young and adult readers has risen significantly. Vampires, ghosts, and mystical romances dominate reading lists, boosted by digital platforms and literary social networks where such recommendations often go viral.
Young readers currently lead Brazil’s book market, representing 35.64% of total sales, according to the Book Retail Panel. Yet, the Portraits of Reading survey indicates that 53% of Brazilians did not read even part of a book in the last three months, underscoring ongoing literacy challenges.
Beyond statistics, the growing taste for paranormal tales reflects a search for escape and belonging. In an era of anxiety and instability, stories blending reality and fantasy offer both comfort and symbolic meaning, mirroring this generation’s inner transformations.
