Five-episode doc-series “Born to Sail” premieres December 17 on Sportv 2 and Globoplay, portraying Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team’s first SailGP season.
Doc-series dives into the world’s fastest sailing league
The Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team is launching its most ambitious content project so far: the original doc-series “Born to Sail”. The production debuts on Sportv 2 and Globoplay on December 17. Across five episodes, the series follows the debut season of the first South American team ever to compete in the world’s fastest sailing league.
Produced by AT Films, the series takes viewers behind the scenes of a campaign marked by speed, high stakes and resilience. The project is a key pillar in the team’s strategy to engage Brazilian fans. It aims to tell a story that goes beyond the sport itself, highlighting the human side of a season full of emotion and turning points.
Martine Grael leads historic campaign on the F50
The cameras take the audience inside the F50 catamaran, where Martine Grael makes history as the first woman to captain a team in SailGP. She faces the challenge of building a crew from scratch and racing against global powerhouses at speeds of over 100 km/h. The series follows the team through iconic venues such as Dubai, Sydney and New York.
By combining thrilling competition footage with intimate moments, the doc-series reveals the human dynamics behind the results. Viewers witness crucial decisions, internal tensions and the team’s transformation throughout the fifth SailGP season. “Born to Sail” offers an unprecedented portrait of Brazil’s journey in the league.
Special guests and global perspectives
Structured in five chapters, the documentary highlights the most intense moments of the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team’s trajectory. It also features contributions from key figures such as Russell Coutts, SailGP CEO, world-record-holding surfer Maya Gabeira and sports journalist Glenda Kozlowski. They help frame the Brazilian team’s relevance on the global stage.
“From day one, I knew this story had the potential to become a major documentary,” says Mariana Britto, Marketing and Impact Director at Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team and general director of the series. For her, SailGP is a young league and still new to Brazilian audiences, which made documenting the behind-the-scenes even more important. Partnering with AT Films was key to capturing the essence of the project.
Britto notes that the goal is to show the general public that SailGP is a dynamic, emotional and adrenaline-filled championship. With mixed crews, elite athletes from different countries sharing the same boat and races held in iconic locations around the world, the league has all the ingredients to win over Brazilian fans. “It is a new universe, full of layers and stories that deserve to be told,” she says.
Cinematic narrative built in real time
Director Alex Tavares, founder of AT Films, followed the team throughout the entire season, on site at every event. “Filming this debut season was, above all, a rare opportunity to build a cinematic narrative in real time,” he explains. The crew worked with handheld cameras, open microphones and full access to the pit lane.
According to Tavares, the mission was always to go beyond the scoreboard and capture silences, tensions, backstage decisions and the cutting-edge technology behind the F50s. Extreme recording conditions, production setbacks and even accidents that shifted the storyline became part of the series. The result, he says, is a visually striking and emotionally rich journey about people, choices and resilience.
Exclusive premiere event and Rio stage announcement
To mark the launch, the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team will host an exclusive premiere for more than 200 guests. In partnership with Cinemark, the screening will take place at Shopping Cidade Jardim, in São Paulo. Two movie theaters will show the series, followed by a cocktail reception.
Speakers include team CEO Alan Adler, director Mariana Britto and filmmaker Alex Tavares, alongside sponsors, media, influencers and athletes such as Marco Grael, Mateus Isaac and Breno Kneipp. The event consolidates the documentary as the team’s main year-end milestone. The premiere will also host the announcement of the ticket sales opening date for the Rio de Janeiro SailGP stage, scheduled for April 12 and 13, 2026.
“This series will show the backstage of Team Brazil in our first SailGP year, one of the most exciting competitions in the world,” says Alan Adler. He stresses that the event goes far beyond sailing skills, involving strategy, crisis management, data analysis and human effort to keep a boat at 100 km/h. Adler also highlights the importance of Martine Grael’s leadership for Brazilian sport.
