National pride on parade

Bloco Tarado Ni Você redefined São Paulo’s carnival over 12 years. This year’s Cinema Transcendental turns streets into a cinematic dream, featuring Tieta, Gabriela, Pixote, and Zé do Caixão.

Founders spotlight the surge. “We’re in a powerful reconnection with Brazilian culture through cinema”, shares Raphaela Barcalla, executive director.

This year’s parade celebrates Brazilian cinema’s power: its stories and iconic characters like Tieta from the Backlands, immortalized by Sônia Braga turning 30. Pixote, Orpheus, Lisbela— so many. We want to bring them to the streets to play, mock, and point out issues, especially in this election and World Cup year. Carnival’s perfect for messaging the nation.

Rodrigo Guima, creative director, adds the political edge.

Caetano Veloso roots

The bloc honors Caetano Veloso yearly. Samba-reggae and afoxé remix his hits. Guests included Duda Beat, Luedji Luna, and Caetano himself.

Music in movies is an old thing for me. As a kid, I’d pretend to score films with a paper straw in Santo Amaro, whistling tunes I made up on the spot for scenes only I saw.

Caetano Veloso, 1977 archive (SRTV/Embrafilme).
