Cacique de Ramos honors new Samba Masters

The legendary samba group Cacique de Ramos honored three members of its Golden Board with the title of Baluartes on November 30: Walter Pereira (81), Sidney Machado, known as Chopp (84), and Teteu José (77). The tribute celebrated their deep connections with Bira Presidente, now Honorary President, and the importance of preserving samba’s legacy.

The ceremony took place during the group Força da Cor’s Samba Circle, hosted at the Doce Refúgio stage. It was opened by Nayra Cezari, communications director, and followed by Márcio Nascimento, vice president. The initiative will continue in 2026, with Fernando José as the next honoree, recognizing veteran members who embody Cacique’s history.

Walter Pereira has been part of Cacique de Ramos since 1964, serving in several leadership roles, including vice president. Raised in Olaria, he is famous for his commitment and friendship with Bira Presidente. His son, historian Walter Pereira Júnior, coordinates the group’s Memory Center.

Sidney Machado, or Chopp, a lifelong friend of Bira, joined the board eleven years ago. Born and raised in Ramos, he has served as Carnival and harmony director in multiple samba schools, earning respect as a symbol of tradition and leadership in Rio’s samba scene.

Alceu José da Silva, better known as Teteu José, first connected with Cacique in the 1970s and later promoted the group as a television producer at Rede Globo. From Itaperuna, Teteu is celebrated as a passionate ambassador of samba and a bridge between generations.

This recognition of Baluartes continues samba’s ancestral tradition of honoring its elders, the carriers of memory and wisdom who keep the culture alive. The initiative began in 2024, when Dona Wilma dos Santos Nunes received the title of “Grandmother of Samba,” cementing her legacy within Cacique’s history.
