Rural Maracatu Cambinda Brasileira, Living Heritage of Pernambuco, celebrates 108 years on January 10 at Engenho Cumbe in Nazaré da Mata. Free event kicks off Carnival with North Mata cultural groups.
Centennial rural maracatu tradition
Cambinda Brasileira de Baque Solto Maracatu stands as Brazil’s oldest continuously active popular culture group in a rural setting. It reaches 108 years at the Engenho Cumbe yard in rural Nazaré da Mata. The party starts at 8 PM and welcomes all ages for free.
Founded on January 5, 1918, it anchors Pernambuco’s identity. Field workers, oral masters and entire families built this tradition over a century. In this way, rural maracatu becomes a means to resist and tell stories.
Iconic elements of baque solto
Its 160 members debut with the visual power of lance caboclos. Adorned in intricate embroidery, ribbons and colors, they turn bodies into symbolic territory. The court forms a moving popular kingdom with Afro-Indigenous ancestral references.
At the core, poetry by Mestre Anderson and contra-mestre Davi Coutinho leads the play. Rhymed verses blend improvisation, social critique and devotion. Passed orally, it structures the procession and engages performers.
The sound features metals, gongs and ground-beating rhythm. This ancestral music envelops the yard and confirms rural maracatu as inseparable dance and ritual.
Global inspiration and cultural preservation
Cambinda has transcended its yard, inspiring films, books and research worldwide. The celebration is part of the ‘Maracatu Cambinda Brasileira Celebration Cycle’ project, funded by Funcultura Geral 2023/2024. Supported by Fundarpe and Pernambuco’s Culture Secretariat, it includes Libras accessibility.
North Mata invited acts
The event features Cavalo Marinho Boi Estrela with sugarcane-themed theater, music and dance. Os Ticuqueiros deliver contemporary sounds from rural roots. Mestre Anderson Miguel also brings North Mata’s Root Ciranda.
