Gardênia Cavalcanti added another unforgettable chapter to her Carnival story on Wednesday (18), parading as the muse of Acadêmicos do Grande Rio. The host of “Vem com a Gente” on Band Rio walked the iconic Marquês de Sapucaí runway defending the theme “Nação do Mangue” (Nation of the Mangrove), designed by carnival master Antônio Gonzaga.

Rooted in the Manguebeat movement and the legacy of Chico Science, the samba school brought to the avenue a parade defined by cultural identity, social commentary, and resistance. In her fourth year with the school, Gardênia led the second float, heading a section rich in symbolism.

A costume as powerful as the theme

Gardênia wore a visually commanding costume dominated by black and earthy tones, sheer fabrics, and rhinestones. The outfit featured a dramatic back piece of black feathers and organic elements evoking the mangrove, representing “Urubus, the royalty of black wings” — one of the parade’s central metaphors.

Vultures, often misunderstood, emerge here as symbols of resilience, renewal, and transformation — creatures that thrive in adversity. The imagery aligns directly with the artistic vision brought to life by the school from Duque de Caxias.

A personal bond with Manguebeat

Gardênia’s connection to the theme runs deeper than the runway. Having lived in Recife for many years, she witnessed the birth of the very movement that inspired the parade.

This year feels different because I lived in Recife for many years. I watched the Chico Science movement come to life and I understand how important it is to tell this story on the avenue and bring Pernambuco’s culture to all of Brazil. — Gardênia Cavalcanti, Grande Rio muse

Grande Rio delivered towering floats, conceptual costumes, and a powerful connection with the crowd, who sang the samba from start to finish.

It was incredible. I’m so happy — it was one of the best parades I’ve ever experienced. Everyone had the lyrics on the tip of their tongue. I looked into their eyes and saw recognition, especially in the first section. That’s the power of the theme, the energy of Manguebeat, and the message Chico Science wanted to shout to the world in defense of people. Grande Rio was flawless. — Gardênia Cavalcanti, Grande Rio muse
