Bloco Cómo te Lhama? devours Latin rhythms and Brazilian daily life in explosive Feb 7 cortejo in BH, with Cumbia Brasilis turning challenges into collective catharsis.
Cannibalism that eats borders
This block blends Colombian cumbia, Brazilian beats and Latin vibes in a parade celebrating “Tropical Reanthropophagy”. It hits Belo Horizonte streets on pre-Carnival Saturday, February 7, from 1 PM, at Rua Gomes Pereira, between numbers 209 and 191, in Boa Vista neighborhood.
Funded by Minas Gerais State Cultural Incentive Law, sponsored by Cemig, it honors Brazil’s knack for turning hardships into art, hacks and humor.
“Carnival isn’t escape. It’s collective catharsis, life affirmation.”— Nancy Mora Castro, art director
The theme “Cumbia Brasilis: Tropical Reanthropophagy” refreshes the Anthropophagic Movement, digesting Latin colors, dances and spiritualities into something fresh.
Everyday items become icons
Three axes inspire costumes: “Reinvented Abaporu”, vibrant takes on Tarsila do Amaral’s painting; “Everyday Objects”, turning clay filters and street cats into symbols; “Iconic Brazilian History Moments”, recreating Varginha ET, Taubaté Pregnant Woman and Hurricane Truck with sharp wit.
Special guests: Saulo Duarte (PA), Di Ferreira (CE), Jeffim Dabazi, Dani Ponce and Aleksey el Majadero. Over 180 in battery and dance ala promise scents and colors galore.
Latin echoes without borders
Vocalist Carlos Bolívia says: “We’re Brazilian because we’re Latin”. The setlist mixes modern Brazilian cumbia with maracatu, ijexá and caporal, resonating with Peru, Argentina and Bolivia.
Conductor Bela Leite cheers growth: “The 2017 seed blooms with dedication and curiosity from drummers”.
Cemig powers Minas culture
Cemig, top cultural backer in MG, supports the block to preserve identity while sparking innovation and access to arts.
