Fresh off their Série Ouro championship, União de Maricá locks in singer Zé Paulo Sierra for their historic Grupo Especial debut in 2027.
The voice behind the title stays on
União de Maricá kicked off the week with a major announcement: on Monday morning (23), the Rio samba school confirmed the renewal of lead singer Zé Paulo Sierra, who will continue as the official voice of the school for the 2027 parade — its first-ever appearance in the Grupo Especial, Rio de Janeiro’s top-tier Carnival league.
Sierra joined the school ahead of the 2026 cycle and quickly won over the community with his energy and connection to the members. His presence was central to the school’s title run in the Série Ouro, which they clinched with the acclaimed theme “Berenguendéns e Balangandãs” — a tribute to Black Brazilian jewelry traditions. During the same Carnival season, Sierra also performed for Portela.
Singer embraces the challenge ahead

União de Maricá motivates me because it is a school that thinks big and, above all, gives us the structure to work. Leadership points to a project that works
School president Matheus Santos emphasized that the renewal reflects months of consistent work between the singer and the community.
“When we thought about Zé Paulo after the 2025 parade, we were looking for someone who could build a close relationship with our community and become a reference. Fortunately, over time, he managed to do exactly that, and we are very happy with all the work done. With Sierra’s renewal secured, União de Maricá moves forward into 2027 with artistic stability and a clear vision. The school arrives at the Grupo Especial as a rising force — structured, ambitious, and already holding its first major championship trophy.
