Aly Muritiba’s short “America” follows a Brazilian immigrant and gains momentum in awards season.
Considered one of the contenders for the upcoming awards season, the short film “America”, directed by Aly Muritiba, is currently engaged in an intense promotional schedule. Aiming to expand its dialogue with both audiences and critics, the film has been screened in special sessions across the United States, followed by Q&A conversations with the cast and director.
Recently, the production was featured at the Variety Screening Series 2025, organized by Variety magazine, and at THR Frontrunners, promoted by The Hollywood Reporter, both held in Los Angeles.
“America” tells the story of Tom (Luca Castellani), a Brazilian immigrant pursuing the American dream, and Josh (Cheyenne Jackson), a writer searching for his next story. Their meeting seems to bring Tom closer to his dream, yet a police officer becomes an obstacle. The film has no release date scheduled for Brazil.
Aly Muritiba is well known among international critics. His feature “Private Desert” was Brazil’s official submission for the 2022 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Years earlier, in 2013, his short “A Fábrica” was also shortlisted for the Oscar. The filmmaker has directed several successful streaming series, including “Cangaço Novo” (Amazon Prime), “Irmandade” (Netflix) and “City of God: The Fight Rages On” (HBO Max).
Brazilian-American actor, producer and entrepreneur Luca Castellani makes his debut as a lead actor in “America”. He stars alongside Cheyenne Jackson, a Grammy-nominated actor and singer known for roles in “American Horror Story”, “Call Me Kat” and “Descendants 3”.
The short is produced by Muritiba Filmes, in co-production with Cinesthesia Factory and Aspen Studios.
