Marco Brotto’s film explores the solar storm behind the auroras that lit up the sky this week.
High-intensity solar explosions turned skies across Europe and North America into a show of vibrant colors. Shades of green, purple and red filled the horizon as a solar storm reached Earth in recent days.
The phenomenon is explained by Brazilian explorer Marco Brotto, known as “The Aurora Hunter”, in the documentary Aurora Borealis: Love in the Form of Lights and Colors, directed by Júlio Mauro and released on YouTube this year.
“What we saw now is very similar to what we describe in the film. These intense solar explosions make auroras visible even in regions where they hadn’t appeared for decades,” says Brotto.
The documentary blends poetry, science and adventure to uncover the mysteries of the northern lights. Filmed in Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Greenland, Canada, Alaska, Norway and the Faroe Islands, it follows Brotto’s expeditions under extreme conditions.
With nearly 180 expeditions since 2011 and a 100% success rate in viewing the phenomenon, Brotto describes a profound experience. “Seeing an aurora is more than observing a physical reaction in the sky. It reminds us of our smallness and our connection to the universe,” he reflects.
