Brazil ranks sixth in global access to JFF Theater, free platform featuring Japanese films with subtitles that refreshes catalog in May with time travel and cultural productions.
Japanese cinema fans still have a few days to enjoy the films available on JFF Theater, the free streaming platform from the Japan Foundation. Throughout February, audiences can watch five productions ranging from time travel films to features about Japanese philosophies. In May, the catalog will be renewed with new options for those wanting to dive into Japanese culture from home.
Catalog divided into two categories
The current catalog is divided into two thematic categories. The first features time travel films, with stories like “Nobunaga Concerto,” where a student travels to 1549 and, being identical to daimyo Oda Nobunaga, takes his place to attempt to unify Japan. There’s also “Time Traveller: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” about a young woman who travels to the 1970s to fulfill her mother’s wish but arrives on the wrong date and experiences an unexpected story in the past. Rounding out the selection is “MONDAYS: See You This Week!”, about office workers who discover they’re reliving the same week repeatedly and must convince their boss to break the cycle.
The second category focuses on Japanese culture, with titles like “The Lines that Define Me,” which tells the story of a university student who finds healing and purpose by learning the traditional art of ink painting (Sumi-e). Meanwhile, “Every Day a Good Day” follows a woman who, while practicing the Tea Ceremony, also learns to deal with life’s joys and sorrows.
Brazil among top viewers
Since this season’s debut, JFF Theater has attracted cinephiles from around the world. According to data from the Japan Foundation headquarters in Tokyo, Brazil ranks sixth among countries accessing the platform — a reflection of Brazilians’ growing interest in Japanese culture.
