Golden Globe 2026 Best Drama winner “Hamnet: A Life Before Hamlet” arrives in Brazilian theaters tomorrow. Exclusive video reveals behind-the-scenes with Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley.
Universal Pictures releases a behind-the-scenes video for Hamnet: A Life Before Hamlet (Hamnet). Directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), it claimed Best Drama Motion Picture and Best Actress in a Drama for Jessie Buckley at the 2026 Golden Globes.
Exclusive video spotlights couple’s chemistry
In the footage, Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley – also a Critics Choice Awards Best Actress winner – share their on-screen experience. Director Zhao details the casting process.
“Our casting director wanted to test the chemistry between Jessie and Paul. Secretly, I hoped he could create a safe space for her to let go. The polarity exploded in front of me. It was so electric, and I knew it was right,” says Chloé Zhao.
The video follows triumphs at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won Audience Award. It closed the Rio Festival 2025 in Rio de Janeiro and leads awards contention.
Plot draws from award-winning book
Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, Hamnet is produced by Oscar winners Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes. The screenplay comes from O’Farrell and Zhao. Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) plays William Shakespeare, with Jessie Buckley (Women Talking) as his wife Agnes.
The story tracks Agnes through the grief of losing her son Hamnet. Deeply moving, it delves into mourning, renewal, and the origins of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Distributed by Universal Pictures, the film opens in theaters on January 15, 2026, with accessible versions.
