American Classic premieres Saturday on MGM+ with a double episode debut — Kevin Kline plays a Broadway star whose public breakdown shakes his entire family.
MGM+ is set to launch American Classic on April 11, 2026, with two episodes dropping at once. The remaining episodes of the eight-episode first season will follow weekly, every Saturday.
A star falls — and comes home
The comedy series centers on Richard Bean, a Broadway legend played by Kevin Kline — Oscar winner for A Fish Called Wanda. After a very public meltdown, Richard retreats to the family theater where his talent first took shape. His erratic behavior quickly sets off a chain of crises among the people closest to him.
As old flames return and long-buried secrets surface, Richard must reckon with the choices that led him to abandon his family and hometown for fame and glamour. Each season will follow a different Richard Bean production, reflecting both the Bean family’s unfolding story and the transformative power of art.
A standout ensemble cast
Joining Kline is Laura Linney — beloved for her role as Wendy Byrde in Ozark — as Richard’s ex-girlfriend, now the town’s mayor and married to his brother, played by Jon Tenney (The Closer). The cast also includes Nell Verlaque (Overcompensating), Len Cariou (Blue Bloods), and screen veteran Jane Alexander, Oscar-nominated for Kramer vs. Kramer.

American Classic was co-created by Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin. The series is produced by FIFTH SEASON alongside Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story, and Anonymous Content.
