With all 18 screenings sold out, the 36th edition of Open Air Brasil closed its Rio de Janeiro season with a landmark 1 million total attendees since the festival’s very first edition.
Presented by Brazil’s Ministry of Culture and Nubank, the festival turned the Jockey Club Brasileiro into an open-air cinema hub from March 25 to April 11, 2026. The centerpiece remained the world’s largest open-air cinema screen, measuring 325 square meters — roughly the size of a tennis court.
“This was the biggest edition in Open Air’s history, with all 18 sessions sold out, and we reached the impressive milestone of one million people in this 25th anniversary year. Cinema has never been more alive!” — Renato Byington, founder of Open Air Brasil
A lineup for every audience
The Rio season offered a broad film selection. Opening night featured the Brazilian premiere of “Pequenas Criaturas”. 2026 Oscar season highlights included Best Picture winner “One Battle After Another”, alongside “Hamnet”, “Sinners”, “Marty Supreme”, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and Brazilian submission “O Agente Secreto”.
Classic film fans were treated to “Superbad”, “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” and “Thelma & Louise”. Family screenings brought “Diário de Pilar na Amazônia”, “Zootopia 2”, “DPA 4” and “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants”.
Blockbusters “Wuthering Heights”, “The Bride!” and “Wicked: Part 2” rounded out the lineup. The festival closed with documentary “Maya and the Wave”, tracing the inspiring journey of big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira.
Live music, food and brand activations
After each screening, live acts kept the energy going. The stage welcomed Pedro Baby featuring Mart’nália, with Luiz Otávio, plus Academia da Berlinda, Ney Conceição Quinteto (Jazz no Cardosão), 2ZDinizz, CATTO, DJ Janot, Jéssica Gaspar, DJ Paulinho Sattamini, DJ Lys Ventura and the Matinê do Quartinho.
The food village celebrated Rio flavors with burgers from T.T. Burger, seafood from La Carioca, Argentine empanadas from Las Empanadas, cocktails by Quartinho, pizzas from Sisi and desserts from award-winning patisserie Absurda.
Brand partners also activated on-site. RD Brasil ran games with product giveaways from Bioré, Artromobil, Bwell or Needs, Freecô and Cânfora/Nescafé. Granado showcased its new fragrance “Yes, nós temos banana!” via a branded car. GWM displayed the Haval H6 with a photo booth, and World Wine set up a pop-up shop for guests to purchase wine on the spot.
Next stop: São Paulo
The next Open Air Brasil season heads to São Paulo in the second half of 2026, with a new lineup set to captivate audiences in Brazil’s largest city.
