The anti-war drama War Tank has debuted on Prime Video, becoming the platform’s most-watched German original and topping 28 countries.
Released earlier this month, the film reached No. 1 in 28 markets during its opening week. It also pulled off a rare milestone for a German Prime Video original: an exclusive theatrical run in the United States before moving to streaming.
With a day-and-date release across more than 240 territories, the story travels far—without leaning on the usual war-movie heroics. Instead, it pushes into psychological pressure, moral collapse, and a darker, more unsettling kind of suspense.
A war film that turns inward
Directed by Dennis Gansel, War Tank is set on the Eastern Front in 1943, during the final stretch of World War II. The plot follows five German soldiers trapped inside a Tiger tank—an icon of Nazi military power—sent on a secret mission behind enemy lines.
The confined space becomes a pressure cooker. Under the effects of methamphetamine, the crew spirals into paranoia, fear, and increasingly brutal moral choices. As a result, the film shifts the battlefield from open terrain to the mind, where silence can hit as hard as gunfire.
Brazilian dub directed by Manolo Rey
In Brazil, the film arrives with dubbing direction by Manolo Rey, one of the country’s most respected names in voice work. With more than four decades in the industry, he’s known for technical precision, artistic sensitivity, and meticulous detail—crucial qualities for a story driven by emotion and ambiguity.
The Brazilian version was recorded in early 2025. According to Manolo, waiting months for release is typical for productions of this scale, which only heightened his anticipation.
“War Tank was one of the most intense projects I’ve ever directed. It’s not about victory or heroism, but human exhaustion under extreme conditions.”
“I focused on respecting silence, emotional weight, and the ambiguity the film proposes. It stayed with me as a professional and as a person.”
A veteran voice in Brazil
Beyond directing, Manolo Rey is widely known as a voice actor. His best-known roles include Sonic (for more than 30 years), Porky Pig in Looney Tunes, Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy, and Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
His credits also include Michael J. Fox, Seth Cohen in The O.C. (from season two onward), and Robin (Dick Grayson) in DC animation staples such as Batman: The Animated Series, Teen Titans, and Teen Titans Go!.
More recently, he handled dubbing direction for major releases like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and returned as Barry while directing season two of the animated series Sausage Party.
Felipe Grinnan voices the commander
The Brazilian dub also features Felipe Grinnan as Lieutenant Philip Gerkens, the officer leading the crew on the film’s central mission. An actor, voice actor, singer, announcer, director, and dubbing teacher, he began his career in 1995 and built one of Brazil’s strongest résumés in the field.
Grinnan is the Brazilian voice for actors such as Adrien Brody, Ewan McGregor, Orlando Bloom, and Jude Law, as well as Drake Bell and Freddie Prinze Jr. His character work includes Marty from Madagascar, Whis in Dragon Ball Super, Thanatos in Saint Seiya, and Roddy St. James in Flushed Away.
In War Tank, his performance helps sustain the film’s intense psychological atmosphere, strengthening the emotional impact of the Brazilian version.
“It’s not just a war movie. The war is there, of course, but the questions go far beyond that. All I can say is: it’s surprising.”
