MUBI and Retrato Filmes release Valor Sentimental, a Cannes winner, in Brazilian cinemas on December 25.
Valor Sentimental, the latest film by Oscar nominee Joachim Trier, arrives in Brazilian theaters on December 25. The film won the Grand Prix at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as Norway’s official submission to the 2026 Academy Awards for Best International Feature.
The emotional story explores family, memory and the healing power of art. The cast features Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Anders Danielsen Lie. The film is directed and co-written by Joachim Trier, alongside longtime collaborator Eskil Vogt.
Critics have praised the film enthusiastically. The Daily Telegraph called it “an extraordinary continuation of Trier’s 2021 international hit The Worst Person in the World”. British Vogue deemed it “a masterpiece”, while Elle described it as “a moving and unexpectedly humorous story that will break you before rebuilding you”.
The plot follows Nora, played by Renate Reinsve, a successful theater actress who reunites with her estranged father, Gustav Borg, portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård. The retired filmmaker plans a comeback with a script inspired by his own family. When Nora declines the lead role, he turns to Rachel Kemp, played by Elle Fanning. As tensions rise, Nora, Agnes and Gustav confront unresolved histories.
Premiering in the Official Competition at Cannes 2025, the film received widespread acclaim and reinforced Trier’s standing as a defining voice of contemporary cinema.
The production is led by Mer Film and Eye Eye Pictures and includes coproductions from Norway, France, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. The project is supported by renowned institutions such as the Norwegian Film Institute, the French CNC, Eurimages and the Nordisk Film og TV-fond.
