Alegro Orchestra’s Christmas Concert, sponsored by Itaipu Binacional, features a new work inspired by Júlia Lopes de Almeida.
The Alegro Youth Orchestra and Grand Choir will perform their Christmas Concert on December 8 at Teatro Positivo. Sponsored by Itaipu Binacional, the event marks the world premiere of “Natal Brasileiro,” a new composition created by young Curitiba composer Mateus Brandão especially for the orchestra.
Inspired by Júlia Lopes de Almeida’s short story of the same name, the piece celebrates the symbolic and emotional richness of the Brazilian Christmas. Blending national rhythms, the music captures the warmth and poetry of the writer’s words, reflecting the family traditions and cultural identity of the country.
The program also includes Christmas classics and symphonic works performed by the children and teenagers of the Alegro Orchestra, known for its artistic and social development mission. The participation of the Grand Choir, featuring volunteers from Curitiba and surrounding cities, adds grandeur to the celebration.
Music, literature and female leadership
The concert honors Júlia Lopes de Almeida, one of Brazil’s most important and pioneering writers, who fought for women’s place in the arts and education. Soprano Renata Bueno and actress Helen Tormina bring the story to life — Helen portrays Júlia as narrator while Renata performs the moving Christmas songs.
“Performing as a soloist means giving voice to a woman who fought for recognition in her time,” says Helen. Renata adds: “Júlia’s work for young readers connects directly with our orchestra’s purpose of showing children that art fosters freedom and transformation.”
Partnerships that make a difference
Since 2023, the Alegro Music Association has operated in the facilities of UP Experience, which also manages Teatro Positivo and Teatro UP Experience. Administrative director Willian Carneiro de Oliveira highlights, “Supporting the project means promoting culture and expanding access to music education in Paraná.”
Itaipu Binacional’s Brazilian general director, Enio Verri, reinforces the company’s social mission: “Music is a powerful instrument for human development. Supporting this concert is an investment in citizenship and hope.”
Founded in 2016, the Alegro Musical Association provides free music education to around 450 children and teenagers in vulnerable situations across Curitiba, Almirante Tamandaré, Lapa, Barbacena and São Paulo. The project includes orchestra training, vocal practice and instrumental classes.
