The Teatro BDO Jaraguá presents the solo show A Luta, featuring Amaury Lorenzo, with its premiere set for November 21. The piece has toured Brazil for two years.

The production is based on the third part of Os Sertões, by Euclides da Cunha, adapted by Ivan Jaf and directed by Rose Abdallah. Moreover, the show has received several Best Actor nominations.

A transformation into a rhapsode

The solo transforms Amaury Lorenzo into a rhapsode. In this way, the actor narrates the War of Canudos using voice and body to rebuild the conflict.

The performance presents the attacks of the Brazilian army and the reaction of the villagers. Meanwhile, the staging highlights orality as its core element.

In this final section of his work, Euclides builds powerful symbolism. Thus, he abandons academic language and describes a war of ideas between republican forces and religious obscurantism.

The narrative contrasts coast and interior, elites and people, faith and reason. Therefore, A Luta encourages reflection on intolerance and violence in Brazil’s formation.

Awards and season

The actor received Best Actor nominations at the Cesgranrio de Teatro 2023, Cenym 2023, and Fita 2023 awards. Finally, the São Paulo season expands the reach of the production.
