A groundbreaking 360° audiovisual experience unites 14 Amazonian artists at Casa das Onze Janelas, running March 10 to May 6, free admission.
Contemporary Amazonian art on an immersive scale
Starting March 10, 2026, the city of Belém hosts Amazônia Imersiva, a large-format 360° audiovisual experience at the Casa das Onze Janelas Cultural Space in the historic Cidade Velha neighborhood. The project was conceived by singer and music researcher Aíla and visual artist and curator Roberta Carvalho, both co-creators of Amazônia Mapping, Brazil’s pioneering art and technology festival, born in Belém.
The exhibition offers a multifaceted view of the contemporary Amazon, drawing on the perspectives of artists from different Brazilian states, territories, and countries. Paintings, prints, photographs, and videos by leading names are projected in a 360° immersive room, expanding their narratives into high-impact sensory experiences.
“For centuries, images of absence, violence, and stereotypes were projected onto the Amazon. Now we project our presence — a presence forged in art, in the technologies we create, in the thoughts we cultivate, and in the radical dispute over our imaginaries and narratives.” — Roberta Carvalho, co-creator of Amazônia Mapping, Brazil’s pioneering art and technology festival, born in Belém do Pará
Three rooms, one Amazonian universe
The occupation unfolds across three spaces. The first houses the main immersive experience, featuring an original audiovisual work created exclusively for this project. It brings together pieces by Ailton Krenak, Coletivo Mahku, Elza Lima, Ge Viana, Glicéria Tupinambá, Hal Wildson, Jaider Esbell, Keila Sankofa, Olinda Silvano, Paulo Desana, Roberta Carvalho, Ronaldo Guedes, VJ Suave, and PV Dias.
The soundtrack is led by Aíla and composed by producer Nelson D, an indigenous artist from Amazonas state. The music journeys through marabaixo rhythms, indigenous sounds, experimental electronic music, and the reggae sound systems of Maranhão. Cinema-quality spatial audio deepens the immersive effect.
The same room hosts live music and visual performances. The lineup includes the show As Amazônias 360°, featuring Aíla, Djuena Tikuna, and Patrícia Bastos, with visuals by Roberta Carvalho and Priscila Tapajowara. Peruvian electronic duo Dengue Dengue Dengue and the project UAPI Amazônia Percussiva — with visuals by PV Dias and Nay Jinknss — round out the program.
“There are many artists involved — from the soundtrack, which dives into Amazonian rhythms from marabaixo to indigenous music, experimental electronics, and Maranhão reggae sound systems, to the live music-and-image performances that reinforce the project’s hybrid, multifaceted character.” — Aíla, artist-curator and artistic director of the project, also responsible for musical direction of NAVE at Rock in Rio 2022, which brought over 50 artists from the Amazon region to the world’s largest music festival
The second space is the Sala Manifesta, where visitors explore concepts and quotes from Amazonian thinkers, the Ouriços Falantes installation — speakers embedded in Brazil nut husks carrying voices and testimonials from artists — and a virtual reality experience presenting works from the Amazônia Mapping archive.
The third room addresses ancestral technologies, broadening the concept of technology beyond high-tech tools. Visitors are invited to recognize the intelligence embedded in traditional cultivation, food systems, the forest’s own structure, and forest medicine — understood as technologies of care, balance, and invention.
International partnership and architectural design
In partnership with the British Council and the Instituto Guimarães Rosa, marking the Year of Brazil in the United Kingdom, Scottish artists Tom Scholefield and Sonia Killmann co-created a work alongside Amazonian artists including Renata Chebel and Nelson D, the result of an artistic residency held in Belém. The world-premiere performance will be presented during the occupation.
The architectural design is by Luís Guedes and Pablo do Vale, founding partners of Guá Arquitetura. The project is presented by Brazil’s Ministry of Culture through the Cultural Incentive Law, sponsored by Nubank, and supported by the Pará State Secretariat of Culture.
