Errol Flynn Gallery marks Antônio Poteiro’s centennial with over 60 paintings and ceramics. Curated by Errol Flynn Jr. On view until January 26, 2026, in Belo Horizonte.
The Antônio Poteiro: 100 Years exhibition draws mostly from the gallery’s collection. Private loans fill it out. It spotlights works from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, his peak creative period.
Born in Portugal in 1925, Poteiro moved to Brazil as a child. Minas Gerais and Goiás shaped his folk-inspired ceramics and visuals.
Poteiro springs from the earth—his work blends clay, color, and memory. In ceramics and paintings, craft becomes language, bridging sacred and human beyond borders or styles. Marcus de Lontra Costa
This show stems from the admiration my brother Junior and I hold for Poteiro’s powerful, enchanting simplicity, echoed by market and critics since his debut, thanks to folklorist Regina Lacerda and artist Siron Franco. Leonardo Reis, director of Errol Flynn Gallery
Featured works
Ceia do Coronel (1976, oil on canvas, 73 x 92 cm) probes social themes. The banquet scene blends celebration with sertão inequality critique. Sacred motifs turn everyday.
Homem e a Tartaruga (1979, oil on board, 46 x 52 cm) turns myth to fable. Man and turtle share earthly patience. World rhythm slows to soil’s pace.
O Mundo (1982, oil on canvas, 70 x 60 cm) crafts personal cosmology. Earth pulses as mystery-filled body. Beings drift human-divine.
Ceramic Pote Ciranda (1976, painted ceramic, 49 x 28 cm) embodies life cycles in dancing figures. Porous and alive, it echoes rural gestures.
Serious and wise
Olívio Tavares de Araújo notes the Flynn brothers’ passion for Poteiro. They gathered 113 pieces, one per year of his life. It matches Goiânia’s top collections.
The show honors ceramics, from functional pots to ornate sculptures. Poteiro rose without formal training. His spontaneous popular art thrived from the 1970s.
Siron Franco spotted his talent and urged painting. By 1978, he showed at Rio’s Galeria Bonino. Success followed in Brazil and abroad.
