Brazil’s Bangu Shopping highlights its permanent Sensory Room during Abril Azul, a month-long campaign raising awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Throughout April, Bangu Shopping — managed by real estate group ALLOS — is running a series of special initiatives as part of Abril Azul (Blue April), Brazil’s awareness campaign for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The campaign reinforces the mall’s ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion, and creating a welcoming environment for autistic individuals and their families.
A Permanent Space Built for Comfort
The centerpiece of the campaign is the mall’s Sensory Room, a permanent facility located on the first floor. Designed specifically for people with ASD, the space provides controlled sensory stimulation and a calm environment where visitors can self-regulate before or during their time at the mall. It represents a meaningful step toward making public spaces genuinely accessible.
Beyond the Sensory Room, the shopping center also offers additional accessibility tools throughout the month, including identification badges, noise-canceling earmuffs, and sensory toy kits — resources designed to ease sensory overload and improve the overall experience for neurodivergent visitors.
Education, Empathy, and Digital Outreach
Inside the mall, visual displays, activations, and educational signage encourage empathy and greater understanding of ASD among the general public. The messaging invites visitors to reflect on respect, coexistence, and the importance of inclusive environments.
The campaign also extends online, with informative content designed to reach broader audiences through a clear, accessible approach. The goal is to foster a more attentive perspective on the daily needs of autistic people and their families.
Part of a National Initiative
The effort is part of a nationwide movement by ALLOS, which positions its shopping centers as platforms for positive social impact. By promoting information and encouraging inclusive practices, ALLOS aims to set a new standard for accessibility in Brazilian retail spaces.
