Audience members pedal bikes to power screenings of “Lilo & Stitch” and “The Wild Robot” in public squares across Brazil — free admission in March 2026.
BikeCine, Brazil’s sustainable traveling cinema project, heads to Ouro Preto (Minas Gerais) and Jahu (São Paulo) this March for a series of free outdoor screenings. The concept is as simple as it is brilliant: all the energy needed to run the projection system is generated by the audience itself, pedaling on 16 stationary bicycles — a system called Motriz Energy.
Cinema powered by the crowd
Films are projected onto a high-tech inflatable Airscreen, and 150 chairs are available for the public. Each event also features a curated selection of short films with accessibility resources before the main feature.
The film licensing is handled by BV Licenciamento Audiovisual, which has licensed over 1,800 audiovisual projects across Brazil for festivals, museums, film clubs, and open-air events. The company represents major studios including Disney, Universal, Warner Bros Discovery, Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and Lionsgate.
“Lilo & Stitch” in Ouro Preto
The first stop is Ouro Preto, the historic UNESCO World Heritage city in Minas Gerais. On Saturday, March 21, the Praça João Paulo Cavalcanti in the Maracujá neighborhood will host a screening of Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” at 8 PM. Doors open at 6 PM, with accessible short films starting at 7 PM.
The event is funded through Brazil’s Lei Rouanet cultural incentive law, sponsored by Minap, and supported by the City Hall of Ouro Preto and the Maracujá Residents’ Association.
“The Wild Robot” and more in Jahu
In Jahu, a city in the interior of São Paulo state, BikeCine takes over the Praça Santa Terezinha do Menino for two evenings. On Saturday, March 27, Universal’s “The Wild Robot” screens at 8:30 PM. On Sunday, March 29, the beloved Brazilian animated feature “Turma da Mônica Jovem — Reflexos do Medo” screens at 8 PM.
Both nights open at 6:30 PM with accessible short films before the main feature. The Jahu edition is sponsored by Athon Energia and supported by the Municipal Secretary of Culture and Tourism.
All the energy for the film screenings is generated by the audience itself through the use of bicycles — 16 in total, powering the entire system.
