Books and samba take over Flamengo Beach

Flamengo Beach turned into an open-air reading room as the Leituraço filled the sand with books, music, and collective encounters.

The first edition of Leituraço at Caribrejo exceeded expectations, proving the power of reading as a collective and transformative act. Beneath the trees and facing the sea, the event transformed the beach into a space of cultural exchange and celebration.

From early morning, the book stand attracted readers of all ages. Visitors who came for a stroll or swim paused to browse titles and participate in a book exchange. Children found their first stories, adults rediscovered old favorites, and each book that changed hands built new connections.

Books hanging from tree branches turned the space into a poetic visual installation — literature swaying with the breeze and blending with the sound of waves. It captured the project’s goal: bringing books into everyday life.

On the sand, an intimate discussion circle brought people together on towels and chairs. The open and inclusive dialogue reinforced the idea that reading is also listening and sharing experiences.

The event concluded with a vibrant samba circle under the trees, merging music and literature into one cultural celebration. Books, rhythm, and ideas flowed freely, affirming culture as a living expression.

Co-produced by Estante Virtual with support from publishers Globo Livros, Record, HarperCollins Brasil, Coquetel/Ediouro, and Editora Vozes, along with Ação da Cidadania, Oficina Raquel, and SNEL, the initiative distributed over 500 free books and reached more than 300 people throughout the day. The project promotes democratization of reading and community cultural access.

With sand between their toes and books in hand, participants proved that the beach can be a true literary stage. This is just the first chapter of many to come.
