The showcase screens 20 films directed by Latin American women from Nov 11 to 30 at CAIXA Cultural Rio de Janeiro.
CAIXA Cultural Rio de Janeiro presents, from November 11 to 30, 2025, the exhibition “Contemporary Latin American Women Filmmakers”, featuring 20 feature films directed by women from across Latin America, in 40 screenings. The program also includes a masterclass exploring women’s creative contributions to Latin American cinema.
A map of women’s cinema in Latin America
The showcase creates a cinematic map of the region, gathering filmmakers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Nicaragua, Haiti, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Guatemala, as well as works from their diasporas. The selected films reveal a vibrant and diverse panorama in which the female experience becomes a language, ethic, and political act of creation.
Highlights include acclaimed titles such as The Swamp (2000) by Lucrecia Martel (Argentina) and The Milk of Sorrow (2009) by Claudia Llosa (Peru), alongside recent award-winning productions like The Fishbowl (2023) by Glorimar Marrero (Puerto Rico) and Daughter of All Rages (2022) by Laura Baumeister (Nicaragua).
International presence and masterclass
The event will feature Ecuadorian filmmaker Ana Cristina Barragán, who will teach a public masterclass on female authorship and contemporary Latin American cinema. Barragán, one of the most distinctive voices of her generation, won the Best Screenplay award in the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival 2025 for her latest film, A Hera.
The project is part of the CAIXA Cultural 2025 Program Selection, an initiative that promotes cultural circulation across Brazil and celebrates 45 years of CAIXA’s cultural centers, now present in multiple capitals, including the newly inaugurated venue in Belém (PA).
