“Autoficções,” by artist Cecília Maraújos, opens December 5 at Ateliê 31 in Rio de Janeiro, curated by Martha Werneck.
The exhibition “Autoficções” opens on December 5 at 6 p.m. at Ateliê 31 in downtown Rio. Curated by Martha Werneck, the show presents around 25 paintings that explore body, memory, and daily life as themes of pictorial investigation, blending autobiographical experiences with reflections on the feminine in art and culture.
Body, memory, and motherhood
Developed from photographs, digital compositions, and research documentation, Cecília’s works combine theory and practice to transform personal experience into artistic experimentation. The pieces address motherhood, identity, and the material presence of the body in overlapping layers of intimacy and reflection.
The exhibition includes series such as “Cotidiano,” inspired by her experience as a mother; “Matriarcado,” exploring pregnancy and postpartum life; “Amnésias,” which reflects on memory and loss; “Faces do Desejo,” focused on cinematic portrayals of women; and “Em Cinzas,” featuring charcoal drawings about presence and introspection.
“For Cecília, painting acts as a gesture of resistance—a way to think about the world from the intimate. Her work transforms domestic life into poetic and political force,” notes curator Martha Werneck.
The exhibition uses nylon-suspended canvases to create a sense of movement and proximity, inviting the viewer into the artist’s process and bodily presence.
