Amazon’s flying rivers come alive in translucent layers in Celaine Refosco’s MASC debut: a poetic journey blending childhood, Paris, and climate crisis, from Feb 4 to May.
Flowing painting: from canvas to space
Santa Catarina artist Celaine Refosco, winner of the 2024 Aliança Francesa Contemporary Art Prize, launches her first solo show at Santa Catarina Museum of Art (MASC) in Florianópolis. Curated by Fran Favero, “Journey to the Dawn of the World” showcases flowing painting. Works shift from figuration to abstraction, oil on canvas to translucent fabrics mimicking river motion.
At its core, the Flying Rivers — vapor masses from the Amazon shaping South American weather. Celaine delves into environmental urgencies through lush aesthetics. Layers evoke childhood memories from Joaçaba: vibrant rivers versus stark gray schools.
“I soon realized ugliness was designed […] I clung to nature as the place of beautiful, easy, simple things.”
In Paris at Cité Internationale des Arts, the Seine fueled more flow. “The Seine’s water flows into my work,” she says.
From textile industry to beauty’s power
Before fine arts, Celaine designed textiles. This shapes her installations. She reimagines industrial processes poetically, probing global consumption.
Drawn from Érico Veríssimo, the show casts beauty as revolutionary force. References span Humboldt to Spinoza. Curator Fran Favero notes: “an attentive gaze that observes, records, and experiments poetically.”
All-women team and immersive experience
