Theatro Municipal de São Paulo presents Césaire Mix-Tape, a performance inspired by Aimé Césaire, from November 14 to 16.
As part of Black Consciousness Month, the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo presents Césaire Mix-Tape, a performative occupation based on the works of poet and politician Aimé Césaire, a leading voice of anticolonial thought and the Negritude movement.
The performances will take place at the Central Técnica de Produções on November 14 (Friday, 8 p.m.), 15 (Saturday, 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.) and 16 (Sunday, 6 p.m.). Tickets cost R$ 30, the rating is 12 years old, and the duration is 50 minutes.
A scenic uprising inspired by Aimé Césaire
Directed by Eugênio Lima, with dramaturgy by Eugênio Lima and the Legítima Defesa collective, Césaire Mix-Tape transforms Césaire’s theoretical writings, poetry, plays and interviews into a performative act of resistance and affirmation. The cast includes Walter Balthazar, Jhonas Araújo, Fernando Lufer, Eugênio Lima and Gilberto Costa, with production direction by Iramaia Gongora.
The performance proposes a Black becoming as a political act of reclaiming ancestral memories and recognizing the influence of Césaire’s thought on Black movements in Brazil and Latin America. Thus, the work unites art, identity and ancestry as forms of resistance.
Aimé Césaire and anticolonial thought
Aimé Césaire was born on June 26, 1913, on the island of Martinique, then a French colony. A poet, intellectual and politician, he was one of the founders of the Negritude movement, born in Paris in the 1930s. His work, centered on the critique of colonialism and the affirmation of Black identity, influenced generations of artists and thinkers.
Among his best-known writings is “Discourse on Colonialism” (1972), a key text that explores the paradox of Black identity under French colonial rule and remains relevant for its reflections on power, culture and liberation.
