The play by Alain Catein and Daniel Dias da Silva humorously explores Brazilians’ fascination with luck and gambling.
After a successful season in Lapa, the comedy “Raspadinhas” begins its second run in Copacabana at Espaço Abu. Starring Alain Catein and directed by Daniel Dias da Silva, the show delves into the playful yet critical side of Brazil’s relationship with betting and the hope of a lucky break.
The story follows an ordinary family whose life is turned upside down after becoming obsessed with lottery scratch cards. Moving between traditional street games and modern betting apps, the play mixes humor, nostalgia and social commentary to portray how optimism and superstition shape the Brazilian way of dreaming.
Luck, humor and cultural memory
Written and performed by Alain Catein, the play draws from personal experiences and childhood memories. “I’ve always seen in my family and neighborhood a sort of affection toward gambling — people played for fun, superstition or even survival. ‘Raspadinhas’ looks at this reality with humor and empathy,” says Catein, who is currently studying Social Sciences.
With fast-paced dialogue and accessible humor, “Raspadinhas” transports the audience back to the 1990s and 2000s through pop culture references, famous songs and expressions from daily life. The result is a lighthearted yet reflective portrayal of Brazil’s collective fascination with chance.
“We wanted a fun, dynamic piece that also made people think about how gambling fits into our lives — as entertainment, escape, or hope,” explains director Daniel Dias da Silva.
Filled with rhythm and humor, the show celebrates Brazilian creativity, identity and the eternal hope of better days.
