Back by popular demand, As Loucas de Copacabana lands in Rio for a summer run at Teatro Cândido Mendes, in Ipanema, from January 20 to February 20. The production leans into classic farce—fast dialogue, escalating lies, and the kind of chain-reaction chaos that keeps the audience laughing scene after scene.

GUGU OLIMECHA’S OLD-SCHOOL COMEDY DNA

The play was written by dramatist Gugu Olimecha, known for scripting some of Brazil’s most iconic TV comedy shows on Globo, including “Zorra Total,” “Sai de Baixo,” “A Escolinha do Professor Raimundo,” and “Os Trapalhões.” Olimecha passed away in 2014, but the comic machinery of his writing remains sharp thanks to its pacing and punchy setups.

A 1990s APARTMENT, ONE SECRET TOO MANY

Set in a Copacabana apartment in the 1990s, the plot revolves around an unlikely love triangle. Nádia—played with intensity by Narjara Turetta—is married to Paulão (Danton Lisboa), an ambitious political aide, while keeping a secret affair with Efigênio (Guilherme DelRio), heir to a major fortune.

The turning point hits when Efigênio must go into hiding in Nádia’s own home. Suddenly, he’s living under the same roof as the betrayed husband, and the trio piles on increasingly absurd tactics to keep the truth from detonating.

MORE MAYHEM: UNORTHODOX THERAPY AND A NOSY UNCLE

The mess grows with Simone (Rose Scalco), Nádia’s friend and a psychologist devoted to unconventional methods, including so-called “sexual therapy.” Just when everything feels unsalvageable, Uncle Gumercindo (Andi Teixeira) barges in, determined to investigate whether his nephew is gay—adding another layer of misunderstandings and comedic pressure.

DIRECTION, A VETERAN CAST, AND SPECIAL GUESTS

Directed by Pia Manfroni, the show keeps a tight, energetic rhythm that highlights timing and physical comedy. The season is produced by DelRio Realizações Artísticas Ltda in partnership with IB Produções.

The cast brings seasoned comedic instincts: Narjara Turetta leads, joined by Danton Lisboa and Guilherme DelRio, with Rose Scalco and Andi Teixeira. There are also special appearances by Marcos Oliveira—beloved as Beiçola from “A Grande Família”—and actress Isabella Barros.

That stage chemistry helps explain the show’s longevity and recurring sold-out runs. After successful stops at venues such as Dulcina and Teatro Cândido Mendes itself—plus performances in Nova Iguaçu, Niterói, and Bangu—As Loucas de Copacabana continues to win over audiences with direct humor, unexpected turns, and delightfully over-the-top characters.
