Antonio Bivar’s classic receives João Fonseca’s direction and debates gender inequality at Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim, January 16 to February 8.
A theatrical experience that combines fantasy and realism, moving audiences while making them laugh as it portrays characters living on the edge of absurdity. This is the proposal of “Cordélia Brasil”, a Brazilian stage classic that receives a new production and arrives at Espaço Rogério Cardoso, at Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim, in Ipanema, for a very short season. Performances run from January 16 to February 8, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 PM, and Sundays at 6 PM.
The play takes place in a decaying studio apartment in Rio de Janeiro and focuses on courage in the face of oppression experienced by women. In the plot, Cordélia (played by Paula Goja) tries to resist poverty and her inert husband. In a journey between explosions of affection and irony, she works as an office assistant and begins prostituting herself to support her partner Leônidas (Antonio Pina), who lives in constant procrastination. The arrival of young Rico (Pedro Pedruzzi) ends up shaking the relationship between the two.
Relevance and social criticism
Considered modern when written in 1968, “Cordélia Brasil” remains relevant more than half a century later. With a poignant critique of ageism, Antonio Bivar’s text calls us to deconstruct in search of consolidating gender equity. It’s an invitation to debate and question: have we advanced in the promise of a less misogynistic society? How much does today’s woman still internally succumb to the care and demands said to be inherent to her condition?
This new production features the direction of João Fonseca, one of the biggest names in Brazilian theater. The production is signed by Persona Produções, responsible for shows such as “Os Analfabetos”, “Quero ser Regina” and “Loucura”.
