Produced by Queerioca, the show blends theatre, film, karaoke, stand-up and pop music to tell a journey of liberation and self-affirmation.

This contemporary, multimedia solo is starred, conceived and written by Cristina Flores, who also directs alongside Nara Parolini.

The piece taps into the emotional and affective power of songs by Zélia Duncan and Lulu Santos to revisit memories, dismantle taboos and portray a process familiar to many LGBTQIAPN+ people: coming out, guided by music.

Performances take place at Theatre II of CCBB Rio, from December 4 to 21, with shows from Thursday to Saturday at 7 p.m. and on Sundays at 6 p.m.

Theatre, film, karaoke and audience participation

The romantic comedy invites the audience into a bar, the setting where the protagonist spends a lifetime rehearsing, at the karaoke, how to exist in the world.

In this space of open mic and small shows, the character, a Zélia Duncan fan, finds a path to unlock the padlocks of compulsory heteronormativity and confront her own internalised homophobia.

The show is participatory and includes shared musical numbers, where the audience is invited to sing along throughout the performance.

The production features live performances by musician and actress Angeliq Farnocchia, who is also musical director, and actor Felipe Maia.

Alongside the central character played by Flores, the audience also follows, through projected film segments, her ex-boyfriend, a Lulu Santos fan portrayed by actor Álamo Facó, with a special appearance by Rodrigo Nogueira.

The narrative mirrors, in parallel, the careers of Zélia Duncan and Lulu Santos, two icons of Brazilian pop who, at different moments, publicly came out as part of the LGBTQIAPN+ community.

Their announcements impacted generations of fans, some positively and others “in shock”, a movement that also resonates in the play.

“‘Chaves do Armário’ is less about when someone comes out and more about how this happens: with risk, with humour, with fantasy, with art and… by singing!”

, says Cristina Flores, a multi-disciplinary artist, winner of the Questão de Crítica Award and nominee for both Shell and Coca-Cola Theatre Awards.

The production is signed by Queerioca, Rio de Janeiro’s first LGBTQIAPN+ Arts and Culture Centre, founded by Cristina together with actress, director and playwright Laura Castro, who serves as executive producer.
