A musical monologue blending Brazilian poetry and MPB classics, starring Dude São Thiago, plays just two nights at the Curitiba Festival in April.
Following sold-out runs in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and Rio de Janeiro, singer and actor Dude São Thiago brings his musical monologue “O Sexo do Vento” (The Sex of the Wind) to the Curitiba Festival for just two performances: April 1 and 2, at 8 PM, at the Teatro Enio Carvalho, in the Centro Cívico district.
The show works like a staged songbook. Dude weaves reinterpretations of landmark Brazilian popular music (MPB) tracks together with original poetic texts he authored himself. The result blurs genre lines in a compelling way. “It’s not a concert, because there’s theater in it; it’s not a play, because there’s something of a recital. The performance happens in that identity gap,” he explains.
A title born from the wind
The show’s name was inspired by “Invento”, a song by southern Brazilian composer Vitor Ramil, featured in the setlist. For Dude, the title is “a provocation about the world’s ambiguity — after all, what gender would the wind be?” That open-ended question captures the show’s spirit: to question, subvert, and reimagine.
The production is structured in four scenes: Denúncia (Indictment), Fe(me)nino (Fe(me)nine), Milagre (Miracle), and Invenção (Invention). Together, they tell what Dude calls “the story of how we tell our stories.” On stage, he is joined by a three-piece band.
A setlist spanning generations of Brazilian music
The repertoire includes “O que será (à flor da pele)” by Chico Buarque; “Cais” and “Conversando no Bar” by Milton Nascimento; “O Charme do Mundo” and “Grávida” by Marina Lima; and “Magrelinha” by Luiz Melodia. A highlight is “Cabaré”, by João Bosco and Aldir Blanc, which received a music video directed by Emerson de Lucca Brandt — winner of Best Music Video in Toronto (EDMVA) and Best Music Video in Latin America in Budapest (IMVA).
When songs we know so well are placed side by side in a narrative, it’s as if they become new again. My desire is to bring the focus back to the song, which has two mothers: music and poetry.
From stage to studio album
The project premiered in November 2023 in São Paulo. In 2025, it expanded into a debut studio album, available on all streaming platforms at https://tratore.ffm.to/osexodovento
The creative team includes pianist Iuri Salvagnini (musical direction and arrangements), Tutu Morasi (movement direction), actor and director João Paulo Lorenzon (scenic supervision), and singer-songwriter-poet Ana Luiza (artistic mentorship).
Dude uses poetry as a tool for subversion, addressing themes such as masculinity, patriarchal violence, prejudice, and materialism — while also celebrating love, the feminine, and freedom. “It invites the audience to reflect, with all the calm that’s missing these days,” he says.
