From March 27 to April 26, the ME Ateliê da Fotografia hosts “Terno das Almas,” a free exhibition inspired by a centenary ritual from Chapada.
The sacred white garments and haunting chants of the mountain ritual from Igatu, in Chapada Diamantina, inspire 16 works featured in the exhibition “Terno das Almas.” The show brings together artists from Brazil and the United States in the ME Ateliê da Fotografia, in Santo Antônio Além do Carmo, Salvador.
Curated by photographer Reinaldo Giarola, the project celebrates Bahian memory and the religious traditions that have shaped the Chapada region. The artworks evoke symbols such as white sheets and embroidered crosses, revealing the spiritual depth of a devotion that has endured through generations.
A tradition that survives time
According to Giarola, the exhibition stems from more than two decades of research on the revival of the ritual, which nearly vanished after the depopulation of the diamond mining towns in the mid-20th century. “Terno das Almas is a movement of faith and remembrance that still echoes through the Chapada nights,” he notes.
Resident photographer and host Mário Edson highlights the sensory strength of the works: “Each artist captures the call of the Terno in their own way — from deep shadows to human landscapes that unveil the collective soul of the Bahian hinterland.”
