Sttar’s new solo show starts away from postcard Carnival. Here, Carnival works as a language: symbolic, political, and reinvented through the body. The debut of “Folia dos Seres” happens on Tuesday, February 10, at Galeria Lama in downtown Florianópolis, with an opening from 7 pm and free entry.

A trip into “other Carnivals”

Curated by Jazz Rafaela, the exhibition brings together around 20 works, mixing revisited paintings and brand-new pieces. The invitation is to dive into “other Carnivals”: those built from memory, fabulation, and the constant reshaping of body and identity—closer to a time-suspension than a literal scene.

Across the gallery, Sttar builds an imaginary populated by hybrid beings, figures in transit, and states of celebration that resist the obvious. In these compositions, excess becomes a poetic gesture; laughter acts as resistance; and costume opens cracks where possible worlds can be imagined.

Past echoes, present urgency

For “Folia dos Seres,” the artist revisits works from different phases of his career, activating the memory of Carnivals already lived. Meanwhile, the new pieces answer the present and today’s urgencies. Together, these timelines create an atmosphere where the party’s cycle returns but never repeats the same way—reinforcing the shifting, inventive nature of revelry.

“My first solo show at Galeria Lama is an encounter: with Carnivals that crossed me, with beings from my imagination, and with the public, invited to celebrate Carnival’s freedom. Put on the masks and let ‘Folia dos Seres’ loose.”

Contemporary art meets popular imagery

Between Carnival as a collective ritual and making art as an intimate experience, the show proposes a meeting point: contemporary art in dialogue with popular imaginaries, without ranking street celebration above studio practice—or the other way around. That tension, between the public and the personal, is where “Folia dos Seres” finds its pulse.
