A comedy rooted in the legacy of a Nobel Prize in Literature winner arrives free of charge in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The show “Querida Mamãe” (Dear Mama) makes its debut on March 22, 2026 at the Teatro Municipal Joel Barcellos in Rio das Ostras, with performances at 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM.

An official stamp from Dario Fo’s centenary

The production was selected to be part of the official celebrations of “100 Anni di Dario Fo”, an initiative organized by the Fondazione Fo Rame in Italy. The program brings together productions from several countries to honor Dario Fo — playwright, actor, and 1997 Nobel laureate — widely celebrated for his contribution to popular theater and the commedia dell’arte tradition. The Brazilian staging receives the event’s official seal.

Directed and translated by Yuri Negreiros from the original work La Mamma Fricchettona by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, the show marks the first collaboration between the Núcleo de Experimentos Cênicos (NEC) and actress Sirléa Aleixo. She received a Shell Award nomination for Best Actress in 2025 and has over a decade of stage experience in Rio de Janeiro. She is also known for her role in the miniseries Betinho: no fio da navalha (Globoplay, 2023).

One mother, one stage, many generations

Told with humor and an accessible voice, “Querida Mamãe” follows a traditional mother whose carefully organized life begins to shift as she grows closer to her son’s young friends and their world. Through comic situations and sharp behavioral observations, the show explores motherhood, marriage, generational gaps, and the possibility of personal reinvention at any stage of life.

“Dario Fo and Franca Rame always tackled social themes with humor and intelligence. ‘Querida Mamãe’ is a comedy that entertains, but also challenges the audience to reflect on shifts in behavior and how each generation relates to the world.” — Yuri Negreiros, director

The production draws from the tradition of popular theater and commedia dell’arte, delivering a dynamic and emotionally resonant experience. It is the seventh project by NEC, funded through the Edital União da Fundação Rio das Ostras de Cultura under Brazil’s Política Nacional Aldir Blanc cultural support program.
